Why Blog

Photobucket

I mentioned a week or so ago that I would post about the importance of having a blog for your Scentsy business, so here it is.

Why should I blog?
This is a question I hear people ask frequently. The reason to blog is to help market your brand. My brand is Melt My Scent so I created the blog for my business using my brand name. How to blog your Scentsy business is up to you, but I have several tips below that will help.

In a previous post I mentioned the importance of getting a domain. After getting a domain a blog should be the next step in your online marketing. With a blog you can use certain strategies to increase your search engine rankings and ultimately use your blog to direct traffic to your Scentsy website. As you can see to the right of my page I have links that direct people to buy, host, or join, which go to my Scentsy website. If you can get a lot of traffic to your blog then that can produce more traffic to your actual sales website as well. Blogs are a great way to get your name out there.

Once you make the decision to blog you will need to figure out the best blog site to use. I obviously like Blogger. Blogger is free and easy to use. I have heard great thing about Wordpress also, it is free as well. Tumblr, Live Journal, and Xanga are good too. Either way I encourage you start a blog to get yourself out there, plus blogs can be fun too!

When working on your blog it is important to use unique content as you will not get high rankings in the search engines if you are copying content. Be different when telling the world about the Scentsy products. Offer different perspectives on why you love the Scentsy products, or how others could turn Scentsy into a career.

You should make good use of key words when working on new blog posts as well. You can go to Google's Keyword Tool and research different keywords to determine which ones might be more effective. Bookmark this tool as you will use it often.

Once you have your blog up and running you need to start marketing it. You can start by sharing it with friends and family through Facebook or other social networks. Share links to it on forums you posts on, and also include a link to your blog in your signature for any forums you frequent. Be sure to update your site frequently to keep it fresh and up to date. I advise at least three times a week, more if you can.

Next you will want to start backlinking your blog. To do this you need to comment on other blogs or websites and leave a link to your blog. You have to be careful when choosing blogs to backlink on. Many blogs these days are "nofollow," meaning leaving your link on their blog will do you no good as far as search engine ranking goes. You will need to leave comments on "dofollow" blogs to ensure your efforts are effective. Here is a site that offers a dofollow search to help you find dofollow sites http://www.inlineseo.com/dofollowdiver/

Once you find a good blog to comment on you will notice that most have a name, e-mail and website field. In the name field you can put your name or a keyword that relates to your blog, such as Scentsy, or Scented Candles. Then use your business e-mail address, and blog URL. Be careful as some sites do not like when you do not use your actual name in the name field, and they might not approve your comments or delete them. You will have to experiment with different blogs to see what they accept. Sometimes you can get away with using your keyword in the name field if you use your name as well. For example, Virginia@ Scentsy.

When backlinking on other websites and blogs make sure you are not being spammy. Take the time to read the full blog post and provide comments that are relevant. People do not like to be spammed. You would not want people coming to your blog and leaving comments only trying to promote themselves, so we need to remember our netiquette.

There is so much more you can do with a blog, but this is a good start. The best advice I can give is to have fun with it. If blogging becomes a chore your blog posts will show it and your readers may lose interest. Also stick with it. Your blog will not start getting tons of traffic right away. You have to give it time and patience.
